Family

I always felt an immense need to form a family. A type of a symphōnia a 'unity of notes sounding together in harmony.' At various times in my life, I have been asking myself a question: what is a family? And I struggled with that question. I also discovered that I am not alone in my mission. Even those who claim to study family get their tongue-tie and mumble something like, "you know few adults and children." "Really?" is my blunt comment to these type of suggestions. I decided not to surrender and focus on another question: "where is a family?" Because, you see, a family is not "what," it is not a number, it is not a gender, a child or two.

A family is a place where the "I" finally becomes "we." A family is the place where "I' transforms into experiencing "our" biggest triumphs and "our" deepest vulnerabilities. A family is a place behind these secret doors where "we" have the greatest potential to do good or fail so miserably. A family is a universal desire for oneness among many. The deep need to belong to the "we". A family is where we build, support, create, cry, share, love, and struggle. Where we think and feel as One. This is the place where we find meaning in "our" life and cherish the value of being part of something greater than "I". Ironically, this is the place where the "I" becomes the Family.

Like a tree with roots that connect it with its heritage and the past. With the branches that look into its future. And with the trunk that merges the past and the future and grows from strength to strength that comes from the current effort and struggle. So

"Let the sky fall

When it crumbles

We will stand tall

Face it all together"

Family
